  • "The Dentist" - Arizona<br />
<br />
I have to admit it - I really don't like going to the dentist. Despite how most dentist rooms are - bright, clean, and cheerful - this is probably how I actually see them - dark, dirty, and fearfull. <br />
<br />
That reminds me - I think it's time to see the dentist again :(<br />
<br />
I don't know where the fear comes from. Maybe its the retainer I had to wear as a kid, maybe the braces... had to be something from childhood, right?

  • This was photographed in 2011 and processed in 2012. It was photographed in Jerome, Arizona and is the same building that appears in my "Smiling Billy" photo.<br />
<br />
It is a 3-photo HDR that was processed using Photomatix Pro. Other software used to complete the look included Nik Software's Color Efex Pro 4 and Topaz Adjust.<br />
<br />
The HDR process really helped bring out all of the detail and grit in this photo. I remember when I was photographing the scene I was facinated with all of the belts hung from every possible place. The old wood door and oil drums were also of particular interest.

  • "Old Bottle Caps" - New Mexico I remember as a kid having a bottle cap collection. I had to hide it from my mother in my closet. I never got to photograph my collection before I eventually had to get rid of it. I wonder if I had any of these... <br />
<br />
Why do kids collect bottle caps? Do they still collect bottle caps? The person who had this nice little collection certainly wasn't a kid. I know for a fact though he is a kid at heart. This was photographed during the Santa Fe workshop Christine Hauber and I in September, 2011. Using the HDR process and CEP4 I was able to control color and detail to get exactly what I was looking for with this image - a gritty, detail rich photo with muted color around the bottle caps. A total of 56 control points were used in HDR Efex Pro to control color and brightness.Equipment: Canon 5DmkII and 24-70mm lens, tripod Processing: 3 photo HDR. Raws were processed in Lightroom. HDR Efex Pro was used for the HDR processing. Image was then processed with Color Efex Pro 4 using Detail Extractor and Tonal Contrast. Then a small adjustment in Topaz Adjust, minor curve tweak in Photoshop, and a last run into CEP4 for Pro Contrast.

<br />
This is a 3-photo HDR image. I processed the RAW files in Lightroom and used Nik's HDR Efex Pro to do the tonemapping.

  • "Paul's Bar" - New Mexico<br />
<br />
This photo was photographed in 2011 outside of Taos, New Mexico. I was on my way to Taos from Santa Fe to scout areas to photograph and immediately turned the car around to get a shot of this bar with tons of character. <br />
<br />
While the original photo was photographed in 2011, it wasn't until the Spring of 2012 when I processed and enhanced the original into what you see now.<br />
<br />
It was photographed hand-held with my Canon 5DII and 17-40mm lens. It is a single exposure image that I processed using Nik's HDR Efex Pro software as well as Color Efex Pro 4 (use coupon code mattsuess to save on Nik's plugins).<br />
<br />
l also used a photo texture from Flypaper Textures to complete the look.

  • Blocked from the public with a chain link fence, an historic building in Denison, TX continues to succumb to mother nature following work done while removing a loading dock area on the left, railroad track side of the building two years prior to me photographing the building in Spring of 2012.<br />
<br />
Separate court cases are preventing anything form being done to the building and it is unclear whether the building can be saved at this point. With each passing storm however, Mother Nature causes a little bit more damage and another brick to fall. Soon this landmark may be gone forever.<br />
<br />
Photographed with my Canon 5DII and 17-40mm lens. A three photo HDR I processed in Photomatix Pro. I also used Topaz Adjust and Color Efex 4 software, as well as a few manual tweaks in Photoshop.
